RZD launches overnight route between Moscow and the Ruskeala Mountain park, using Talgo intercity trains
Russian Federal Railways company RZD last week launched a new overnight train service using Talgo intercity trains. The route connects Moscow with the Republic of Karelia and gives direct access and with no stops to Ruskeala, in northwestern Russia.
The Ruskeala park is located next to the Finnish border and is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in north Russia. With vast natural landscapes, mountains and boreal forests, luxury travellers can enjoy subterranean rivers running along caves, cascades, and crystal-clear lakes.
RZD has allocated to this route the same Talgo trains which were already being used in the international Moscow – Berlin route, units with a top speed of 200 km/h and three classes: Tourist, First and Grand Class –the latter with a fully equipped shower within the exclusive cabin.
As part of the offering, which includes an à la carte restaurant, three nights accommodation onboard the train, and a full range of experiences in the Ruskeala park, RZD will also use an historical steam locomotive in the final leg of the trip, inside the natural park.
Talgo intercity trains have been operated in commercial service in the Russian Federation since June 2015, connecting Moscow with Nizhny Novgorod. Starting December 2017 they have also served the Russia – Germany international route using the company’s automatic track-gauge changing system, and since last August RZD has allocated them to the Saint Petersburg – Samara line.
The intercity units are maintained in the Talgo facilities located in Moscow and enjoy a high passenger demand, with an average load factor of 90%. Since their first commercial trip, more than 9 million passengers have used them both in domestic and international routes.
