Egypt awards Talgo with a contract for the manufacture and maintenance of six last generation Talgo trains

  • The contract amounts to 158 million euros and includes maintenance for 8 years
  • The trains will have capacity for close to 500 travelers and will operate with a commercial speed of up to 160 km/h
  • Talgo long-distance trains are already present in other countries such as Spain, United States, Kazakhstan and Russia

The Egyptian national railway company ENR confirmed yesterday, April 6th the award to Talgo of a contract for the supply and maintenance of six complete last generation Talgo trains for a total amount close to 158 million euros, which will provide service on the main route of the country, connecting the cities of Alexandria in the Mediterranean with the capital, Cairo, and the southern city of Aswan.

Under the scope of the contract, which has been awarded after an open competitive process in which some of the world's leading railway rolling stock manufacturers have participated, Talgo will supply six complete units composed of a diesel-electric locomotive, a technical car or power car and 14 passenger cars. The order also includes the integral maintenance of the Talgo units for at least eight years, using foreseeably local labor trained by the Spanish manufacturer.

The new trains, which will be operated at a maximum commercial speed of 160 km/h, will be equipped with the exclusive and efficient technologies currently used by Talgo in conventional railway environments as varied and technically demanding as Spain, the United States, Kazakhstan or Russia, and will have capacity for 492 passengers distributed between first and second class, a cafeteria, as well as spaces specifically designed for travelers with reduced mobility.

Interior design has also been performed based on Talgo's experience in high-comfort long-distance trains and services such as those supplied for the Meca-Medina Very High Speed line in Saudi Arabia, with certified indoor climate control for extreme temperatures, onboard WiFi connectivity throughout the train, and infotainment systems with LED screens in each of the seats located in first class.

The national company ENR launched the purchase process in August 2016 as part of a project financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the final phase of bid submission was closed last October 2018. After the signing of the contract, scheduled for the coming weeks, Talgo will proceed to launch the project with the aim of delivering the units during the years 2021 and 2022.

Although it is mainly known for its very high speed systems for operation at more than 300 km/h (it is, in fact, the company with the largest market share in the competitive Spanish market), Talgo has more than 75 years of experience in the manufacture and maintenance of conventional rolling stock.

Its trains are present in North America, Europe and Asia, where they accumulate more than 430 million kilometers in service in an annual basis, a distance equivalent to twice the distance between the sun and the planet Mars.

As part of the current diversification strategy, in recent years Talgo has also completed the development of its Vittal platform for commuter and regional services, which is based on the Avril high-speed technology platform. Additionally, Talgo was recently awarded a framework contract for the supply of up to 100 trains for the German operator Deutsche Bahn, and with a first firm order of 23 units named at the time as Talgo ECx, which will be used to international services between Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland.
