The Danish operator DSB announced the decision to increase by more than 10% the capacity of the eight Talgo Intercity trains ordered to the manufacturer in February 2020. From a capacity of 442 seats in the initial order, DSB has decided to increase the number of carriages and the trains’ capacity to 492 seats. Following the contract award, the Danish operator had kept the option to place further orders for additional units, either entire configurations or individual carriages.

DSB has taken the decision after experiencing an increase in ticket sales for international transport, particularly to Hamburg, between 2019 and the outbreak of the global pandemic caused by Covid-19. Denmark’s promotion of rail largely drove this increase as an environmentally friendly alternative to, for example, air travel, which is why DSB will continue to support the sustainable use of rail as a method of transport, using the Spanish manufacturer’s trains.

DSB chose the Talgo 230 platform as the new train model for its fleet to reduce the carbon footprint of its transport system. The Talgo 230 to be manufactured for DSB will run at a maximum commercial speed of 200 km/h, be wider than those of the competition, offer more interior space for passengers, and allow full accessibility throughout the train, facilitating access for people with reduced mobility. This train model was also chosen by European operator Deutsche Bahn in 2019.

The Talgo 230 trains for DSB will link from 2023, the Danish capital Copenhagen with one of Germany’s main rail hubs, the German port of Hamburg.

The Talgo 230 platform is based on the same technological foundation that has established the Spanish train producer’s intercity trains as an international reference. They are light vehicles boasting independently rotating, self-guided rolling assemblies, able to maximize capacity and which can mount natural tilting systems and/or automatic track-gauge changing systems. They are also highly scalable: acquired as conventional trains, they can be easily and inexpensively upgraded into true very high-speed trains for commercial top speeds of 300km/h.

The Talgo 230 trains awarded by DSB are to follow the ones already awarded by Deutsche Bahn in early 2019 under a 100-train wide framework contract that included an immediate order for 23 trains, which will be allocated to landmark routes like the one linking Amsterdam in Netherlands to Berlin in Germany. Talgo also has conventional intercity trains operating under very different scenarios like Russia, United States, Canada or Kazakhstan.
