Talgo Avril: Maximum Capacity at High Speed, with Optimal Comfort

Talgo Avril is our most advanced train and the best solution for railway operators with high capacity demands. Avril combines maximum speed, low energy consumption and a high capacity of more than 600 passengers in an extremely lightweight single-deck train. AVRIL is the most efficient high-speed train in the world.

A Fully Customisable Option

Talgo has developed the technological platform that the market needs: a high-speed train with maximum capacity, which not only transports the highest number of passengers on each service, but also speeds up passenger boarding and unboarding operations and is fully customisable.

Increased Capacity On A Single Floor

Talgo’s exceptional design for its trains, which are based on short articulated vehicles, allows for the use of lighter bodyshells. This is again the case with AVRIL, which offers a greater width for the operator but without exceeding the infrastructure loading gauge.

This optimises the train’s features since it can seat more than 600 people without having to resort to a double-deck layout, which makes boarding and disembarking the train harder and brings about an unwelcome feeling for passengers of being boxed-in. The Talgo AVRIL guarantees passenger comfort by allowing sufficient space for each individual passenger by not allowing the design of the train to reduce the width and the distance between the seats.

The ability to carry more passengers improves rolling stock utilisation, allowing operators to offer more competitive prices while decreasing overcrowding on the most popular routes. As a result, operators stand to increase profits and provide a greater return to investors and taxpayers.

A Flexible Layout With Room To Spare

  • Talgo AVRIL is the widest very high-speed train available on the European market today, and it offers various seating arrangements:
  • Customised layout offering several possibilities: 3+2, 2+2 or 2+1
  • Seats adapted to all uses: A different configuration is available for all types of passengers: individuals, couples, or groups of three to six people.
  • The business offer is also adaptable to demand, with flexible middle seat arrangements.

Rapid Passenger Flow At Stations

Thanks to our efforts to increase the seating capacity of a single floor train, and the unique quality of Talgo trains in which the floor is situated at platform level, AVRIL is the world’s most accessible transport solution.

Passengers carrying luggage can get on and off the train freely due to the high number of doors. Inside they can move around without restriction and without having to use the stairs. But the benefits aren’t just limited to increased passenger satisfaction. The train’s design means that the time spent at stops is reduced, which helps to optimise the use of rolling stock and infrastructure.

A Solution For Every Need

Talgo AVRIL train is designed to be adaptable to the individual needs of every operator. With maximum reliability, high interior comfort and low operating costs as baselines, the client is able to decide which solution suits them.

Critically, there are no longer limits to interoperability:

  • Avril can operate on non-electrifiedlines by using diesel engines, allowing operators to reach more destinations by simplifying last mile operations.
  • The train can be equipped with Talgo’s automatic variable gauge system to allow operation on tracks with different gauges.
  • Avril is compatible with the most common electricvoltages used on railway tracks anywhere in the world, including direct and alternating current.
  • It can be equipped with any train control or monitoring system, including, ERTMS, TVM, LZB, Indusi, ALSN, ATC, BACC, CONVEL.
  • By utilising Talgo’s natural tilting system, the train can offer increased speeds on conventional lines which can help to avoid costly infrastructure upgrades.

Less Weight, More Efficiency… More Productive All Around

Transporting more than 600 passengers at 330km/h is Avril’s main claim to fame, but it’s not the only one. After all it is the world’s lightest high-speed train, which means it can offer drastic reductions in operating costs.

Thanks to its design and its running gear, AVRIL’s energy consumption is lessthan that of any other train available on the high-speed market today. And with its high capacity, the result is simply unbeatable energy expenditure per passenger.

On top of that, the design of its componentsand the ability to use generic systems reduces maintenance costs and the amount of time the train has to spend in the workshop.

High-Speed Experiences Worldwide

Projects

Variable Gauge at 300 km/h

Thirty units of this recently designed model, featuring variable-gauge running gear and 300 km/h operating speed, will soon join the rail fleet of the Spanish operator Renfe. The aforementioned characteristics make this train especially versatile and capable of delivering high speed to almost every corner of the country, while, due to a 3+2 seat arrangement, a standard unit can carry over 600 passengers at a time. The new Avril is a synonym of maximized passenger capacity and environmental sustainability, the latter owed to its light weight.

30 State-of-the-art Units

In 2016, Renfe announced an international tender for the construction of 15 very high-speed trains to operate commercially at 330 km/h and their maintenance during 30 years. In this open, competitive bidding Talgo became undisputed winner.  The initial scope was later extended to include another 15 trains, ending up with a total of 30 state-of-the-art units to deliver to Renfe.

Half of these trains are designed with automatic dual-gauge running gear and multi-voltage supply systems, which will allow them to run practically throughout the entire national railway network, improving the commercial offer available and reducing travel times. Also, another 10 trains will be prepared to operate in France.

Increased Passenger Capacity For Maximum Efficiency

One of the goals of the Avril project is to efficiently transport as many passengers as possible. Its 3+2 seating arrangement in Tourist class cars has become possible due to an optimum adjustment of the vehicles to the permissible loading gauge: the number of seats is increased without reducing the individual passenger space available in the wider trains of other manufacturers.

The inner layout of the new Avril can be modified to meet any potential need, since its cars´ modular design provides for a quick and easy configuration change.

All-track Train

Avril is versatility. For the first time, Talgo is implementing its automatic variable-gauge technology in trains with operational speed of over 300 km/h, so far available only on rolling stock of up to 250 km/h.

That way Talgos will be able to reach any part of Spain with electrified lines in a considerably shorter time, transporting more passengers than any other train. In terms of speed, the new technologically evolved model will take the most of the high-speed infrastructure (European standard tracks), something which the existing dual-gauge trains cannot do, and will bring these advantages further to the conventional lines (Iberian standard track). The resulting general travel time savings will be beneficial for both, passengers and railway operator.

The new rolling stock has been designed multi-voltage, for running on 1,5 and 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC electrified lines, and fitted with the most technologically advanced signaling and safety systems: ERTMS and ASFA for the national rail network, and TVM and KVB for France, to allow Renfe operate its Avrils on either side of the Pyrenees.

Clean Technology For A Zero-emissions Today

Compared to analogues, Avril´s energy consumption is at least 30% lower, due to the extremely light weight. This feature also provides for faster acceleration and braking with the resultant shorter stopping distance and considerable increase of time operated at maximum speed.

Renfe´s technological challenge these days is to position railway in Spain as a clean, sustainable and low-emission transport system, and the best way to fast-track the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Fully Accessible Train

Similarly to the rest of Talgo trains, the new development features a unique single-axle running gear with a yoke-shaped frame, allowing to design cars with the floor same height as platform and no internal barriers through the entire train. This provides enhanced autonomy to Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM) who can access Talgo trains unaided, without having to go up and down the stairs.

Continuous low floor also provides for a 20% faster passenger boarding and disembarkation, if compared to similar trains. This considerably reduces stop times at stations and, as a result, operational costs.

High-speed And Cost-efficient

The new Avril for Renfe is expected to yield high returns thanks to a whole array of unique characteristics: increased passenger capacity obtained by a 3+2 seat arrangement will provide for a more efficient use of available space, while a high availability ratio of 99,09% will guarantee that the train remains operational during almost its entire service life.

Due to the absolutely track-friendly running gear design, Avril also contributes to the extension of the infrastructure service life. The train also maximizes power return to the electrification system, and its interoperability is the key for further expansion of very high speed to places out of reach of the new rail lines.
