Talgo auxiliary machinery covers all maintenance areas to ensure fleet safety and quality conditions for operation.
More than 400 maintenance units designed and built by Talgo are currently in operation in 44 countries, meeting the needs of the leading railway manufacturers and operators.
Talgo Maintenance Equipment is classified in three main groups:
Underfloor Wheel Lathes

CNC lathes designed to reshape wheel profiles with no need to dismount the trains´ bogies or wheelsets and are adaptable to any client´s operational requirements and facilities.
Each Talgo wheel lathe model is available in the following configurations:
- Single: machining of one wheelset at a time.
- Tandem, fixed wheelbase: simultaneous machining of two wheelsets of a bogie
- Tandem, variable wheelbase: simultaneous machining of two wheelsets, with the possibility of machining bogies with different wheelbases.

Measuring equipment

Talgo supplies both automatic equipment and manual devices which are designed to detect any flaw or defect in the wheels without stopping the train to perform these measurements.

Main characteristics of Talgo measuring equipment:
- Measurements can be taken at different speeds, without having to maintain a constant speed
- Measurements are taken automatically, without human intervention, offering an important advantage in terms of cost and quality. Efficient traceability is ensured by identification antennas and tags, which automatically relate measurements with measured units.
- A unique database for all wheelsets guarantees better supervision of the wheels´ state, optimising their service life, quality and safety.
Talgo’s manual measurement instruments and automatic measuring equipment is divided into four modules: EVA (machine vision module), DSR (superficial defects detection), EMO (wheel out-of-roundness detection) and Electric Shunt. All these can be supplied individually or as part of a package.
E.V.A.
Machine Vision Measuring module.
The E.V.A. module controls the wheel tread profile and measures wheel parameters without coming into contact with the wheel. Measurements are made during the train’s passage through the installation at speeds of up to 50km/h, depending on the equipment model.
* Basic parameters measured by E.V.A.:
- Flange height.
- Flange thickness.
- Flange angle qR
- Distance between the inner wheel faces (AR)
- Distance between the active wheel faces (SR)
- Tread thickness
- Tread conicity
- Tread hollow wear
- Tread width
- Wheel diameter
*Other parameters measurement according to client requirements

D.S.R.
Wheel Surface Defects Detection module
The DSR Talgo module, which is provided with an advanced ultrasound system, detects and measures the impact of wear on the wheel tread, which is evident in deformities including cracks, flats, shelling, and material internal structure changes. Measurements are performed during train passage through the installation at a maximum speed of 10km/h.
E.M.O.
Wheel Out-of-roundness detection module
Talgo’s wheel out-of-roundness detection module employs machine vision technology to promptly detect wheel ovalisation in a reliable, precise and cost-friendly manner.
Wheel inspection is performed automatically during train passage through the installation at a maximum speed of 5km/h. The process does not require human intervention, which offers an important advantage in terms of cost and quality.
ELECTRICAL SHUNT
Measuring Equipment for axle shunting
Talgo Shunt measures electrical resistance between the wheels of the same axle in a reliable, precise and economic manner.
High precision measuring technology is employed to automatically detect any electrical resistance between the wheels of each wheelset during passage through the installation at a maximum speed of 10km/h. This process again does not require any human intervention.
MANUAL MEASURING EQUIPMENT
Talgo offers three types of manual measuring tools:
- Diameter measuring tool
- Wheel parameters control manual tool
- Flange height
- Flange thickness
- qR
- DIF calliper:
- Measures distance between the inner faces of the wheels of the same axle.
