Series 102 and 112 trains are Talgo's solution for the Spanish very high-speed market, one of the most competitive in the world. Capable of operating at 330km/h, their superb features have established them as a Renfe favourite.
Spain's high-speed railway has two key traits: it is one of the most extensive national networks, and it is currently the most competitive and open market for rolling stock in the world.
As opposed to countries like France or Germany, where it is customary to purchase rolling stock almost exclusively from the leading national company, Renfe has assembled its high-speed fleet through a series of extremely competitive tenders in which companies from all over the world have participated. In an environment where only the best features and lowest purchase and operation costs succeed, Renfe has tended to favour Talgo 350 with its fleet now containing 50 of these sets, which are designated Series 102 and 112.
A decade of success
Talgo Series 102 trains first entered service on the Spanish high-speed network in 2005.
The 16 Series 102 units are the result of several years of in-house technological development which was initiated at the beginning of the 1990s. Close cooperation with Renfe has since informed enhancement and upgrades to the platform with the 30 additional sets from a subsequent order offering greater seating capacity on a train that already boasts excellent energy efficiency and reduced maintenance costs. These Series 112 sets entered service in 2010.
