Talgo Series 8: Adapted to North American Standards
The Series 8 trains are the latest Talgo development for the North American market. They are specifically designed to operate in this region and are compliant with all FRA standards including more demanding requirements for universal accessibility and structural resistance in the event of collisions.
The success of the five trains manufactured by Talgo in the late 1990s for the Cascades service between Portland and Vancouver led to a follow-up order in 2009. However, this time Amtrak did not just need additional trains, it needed trains that would enhance the attractiveness of its services on the West coast and on the route between Milwaukee and Chicago. The states of Oregon and Wisconsin respectively requested a solution that would deploy state-of-the-art technology to offer a quality and cost-effective public service that fully comply with strict federal technical standards. The Talgo Series 8 is the answer to these specific requirements.
Made in America
- Technology transfer and compliance with Buy American regulations.
- Economic stimulus: project creates jobs directly and supports local suppliers.
- In compliance with demanding FRA/CFR and European standards. The trains are more resistant to telescoping, pile ups and overturning.
- Crash Energy Management (CEM) systems that meet statutory requirements, and a seat-affixing system capable of withstanding eight times the force of gravity.
Increases operator profitability
- Maximum speed of 200km/h but can be adapted to high-speed services of up to 250km/h.
- Adaptable length, with seats available for up to 600 passengers on each train.
- Lightweight train reduce energy consumption.
- Coupling compatible with the entire Amtrak locomotive fleet.
- Articulated rolling assembly and Talgo tilting technology offers enhanced performance in curves without upgrades to infrastructure.
Enhanced comfort and complete accessibility
- Full accessibility: single floor at a universal height, while automatic sliding doors and suitable toilets offer improved access for people with reduced mobility.
- Good atmosphere: HVAC systems adapted to work at temperatures ranging from -40ºC to 49ºC. Pressurisation in cars while the air conditioning system is located under the vehicle bodyshell.
- Bar-buffet and dining car in every train.
- Quiet and stable running gear.
- Infotainment systems at-seat and in cars.
- Plug socket in every seat and Wi-Fi access.
- Cars to transport bicycles and luggage.
Cab car
- Push-pull with cab car: no need to change the locomotive from front to rear at the terminal station.
- Passenger coaches manufactured in steel for maximum structural resistance.
- Fully equipped and ergonomic locomotive control stand.
- Auxiliary equipment installed includes an electric generator and water tank.
- Rolling assembly of the cab car optimised for push-pull operations with the front bogie (Bo') and joint back rodal (Talgo truck) coupling with the adjacent car.
